Every child in our school is supported in their journey towards becoming confident, willing and curious mathematicians. We have ambitious expectations for all of our children and recognise the importance of underpinning concepts and procedures with a deep and enduring understanding. Children learn to make connections and spot patterns as they explore maths represented in wide range of ways. By building a community and shared purpose in our classrooms, we encourage children to collaborate effectively and communicate their ideas and reasoning. They become flexible, logical, resourceful and creative problem solvers, who can use their mathematical skills independently, fluently and efficiently. Castercliff children enjoy maths that is engaging, relevant and inspiring, in an environment where all children are able to SHINE.
At Castercliff Primary Academy we aim, in line with the National Curriculum, to ensure that all pupils:
* become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils have conceptual understanding and are able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately to problems.
*reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
* can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
The children study the following key areas of mathematics:
Teaching in EYFS and KS1 uses planning materials from the Lancashire Mathematics Team, including Red Rose Mastery Maths in KS1. Teaching in KS2 uses planning materials from White Rose Maths. Yearly overviews can be found at the bottom of this page, although we adapt these each year to meet the needs of the children in our school.
